A Beginner's Guide to the Underworld

Many people wonder what the Underworld is like, and what it is there for. I am here to answer all the questions for the people who can't wait to get into the action with the veteran players. Want to know how you get there and who to go with? This article will guide you.

The Underworld (or UW for short) is a place where ascended level 20s go and get experience for skill points. You must be ascended through the Crystal Desert to go or else the ghost won't take you in (just do all the missions). Although it is primarily used to get experience for skill points, there is one thing veteran players know and love. It is called Ectoplasm (ecto for short). Ectoplasm is what is needed for Fissure of Woe armor, which is the most expensive armor in the game. They usually go for around 10k-15k each depending on the market. However, the chances are rare that you get one because not only is there is not a one-hundred percent chance the group will even get one, but there is also the one in eight chance out of your full party that you will be the one to get it.

People will usually find themselves in a group of total strangers that hope that they can work together and do the quests with ease, but this is rarely the case. I have gone through the Underworld many times and most times only do one quest before people start leaving or people start dying. The key is to get a group of people you know. You could get people from a guild that you are in or have been in, or you can do it with some friends. A voice communication program like Ventrilo or Teamspeak is probably a must if you want to really be involved with a good guild and go through the Underworld a lot. Some guilds require members to use voice programs for Underworld and PvP.

Beware though because in order to go, the group needs to pay 1k in total (125 gold each if there are eight in the group). Most leaders will just ask for the 125 gold before your group goes in but there could be scammers out there. Not only are you giving 125 gold to someone you don't even know, and playing with people you don't even know (chances are that you won't do well anyways), but there is also the chance that the leader will leave and scam you for the huge amount of 125 gold. That would be a real loss, and gets annoying the more it happens. That is why some people will only go with who they can trust and know. The better relationship with the people you are playing with, the better you will do (that is a tip for everything you do in Guild Wars).

To be honest, I couldn't wait to get to the veteran spots like the Underworld and Fissure of Woe. I thought that was where all the "god" drops like the Fell blades and Chaos axes took place. If that is what you are looking for then the Underworld is not the place to be spending hours on. I actually got fooled and spent a good twenty hours trying to get a Chaos axe for my Warrior. All I got was about 30k gold worth of ecto and a lot of skill points. I wasn't sad because of the 30k in one given day (yes I am quite the loser).

In the end the Underworld is a great place to go if you need the skill points. You would be better off trying to get weapons in the "Crystal Desert" and "Pedition Rock" at the end of the game. It is the place to get ecto though so it is important if you want to spend 2 million gold on armor. If you are just starting the game, don't get too antsy-in-your-pantsy; you will get there eventually.
